The principle objective of ATC is the elimination of mines and UXOs throughout Afghanistan, the overall social and economic benefits of this being: Increasing food production, which in turn improves health and quality of life, reduces external food aid required in food deficit areas and increases economic activity through the production of primary and processed goods; Increasing repatriation, which in turn reduces external aid required to support refugees and internally displaced people, reduces the burden on neighboring countries who are supporting refugees and increases internal economic activity through increased demand; Reducing injuries and fatalities, which in turn improves the safety and security of families and workers and reduces the national and family burden of treating and supporting mine/UXO victims; Increasing employment opportunities, within the commercial sector through increased national production, as well as for employees within ATC; Increasing micro and macroeconomic activity through increased commercial opportunities and local expenditure in country; Increasing individual and national self reliance and correspondingly reduced need for external aid; Increasing access for emergency, rehabilitation and development projects through clearance of access roads and clearance of areas in preparation for subsequent assistance projects; ATC also: Provides an emergency response section to rescue persons trapped in minefields and other similar situations; Provides mine risk education to civilians in mine affected areas by volunteer members of demining teams; and Operates as safely as possible, while maintaining high levels of productivity and efficiency; |
