In 1993, ATC contracted a British bomb disposal specialist to help clear bombs and rockets scattered all over Kabul City. A team of three men was able to work in the Capital despite fighting which continued in some areas. Their contract terminated in year 1995
In year 1995 ATC further developed this facility by employing an EOD specialist to form the leadership basis of two larger 7-man EOD teams which was later increased to four teams, to give greater countrywide coverage where needed. At the beginning of year 2002, because of many cluster bombs and UXOs during toppling Taliban Government another 8 new EOD teams were funded by the EU through InterSOS working within ATC, which has increased the total EOD teams in ATC to 12. These teams are now busy clearing Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) all over Afghanistan. The teams’ main specialties are the “render safe” and destruction of unexploded aerial bombs (UXBs), guided missiles and large and complex unexploded ordnance items, and the large scale demolition of bulk stocks of safe to move Explosive Ordnance. |
